Is it time for a wealth tax?

My wealth & that of many others like me, has always been used to keep the Marxists out of any ability to make that law.

We seem to be winning that one . . . .

Lord Sieff, of Marks and Spencer, used to be in the House of Lords, helping to make British laws.

So you failed.

It all depends how good the aim is regards taxes and charities. Some of those in need are desperate and the target is often missed by both.

Not a "habit"; more of a modus operandi, a raison d'etre.

(No french keyboard, I'm afraid).
modus operandi isn't French. ;)

raison d'être, you're welcome. ;)

I think everyone (individuals and organisations) who earn should pay a fair amount of tax based on their income and yes, it's all subjective as to what fair is. I don't subscribe to people having to pay a ever higher % because they earn more and tbh I'm not surprised many of the truly wealthy will find (hopefully legitimate) ways to reduce their tax burden. If you're PAYE less chance to do so. If I create a hugely successful business that employs many and has a positive knock-on effect for the surrounding economy, why am I rewarded by being shafted for tax? Some of the property taxes also frustrate me. Ah, you bought your property for £180k x years ago using your hard-earned and paid a mortgage for 25 years. It's now worth £950k? You're selling it? We'll take a significant wedge off your profit in tax, thank you very much. Where does this tax go? Oh, to fund various stuff, including propping up people in society that are lazy sods and haven't worked a day in their puff.'

Btw, I'm neither wealthy nor living in an expensive property.

There is nuance in the debate around 'reducing inequality' -we should drive towards creating a better society by giving more opportunity to the poor, but not doing it by envy politics and wanting to take from the rich.

That's traditional Labour fooked then.

Let's assume that Dork has aquired assets of approx £9million over his working lifespan.

You want to tax that?

Give me a bloody good reason, or you'll need a few of your 'mates' to help out when you come to collect it.

£9 million ; pay up.
£900 million; (don't) pay whatever you feel like.

That's the way it works.

You're describing an investment property.

Not an owner-occupier main house to live in.

If you invested in gold bars, or stamps, or shares, and made a capital gain on sale, would you pay tax?
