Is there a special type I need to get for putting under a gravel driveway?

There's basically two types of membrane:
A geotex material used for separating, say, layers of hardcore form mixing into the soil, or preventing soil infiltrating gravel around soakaweays, often white and sold in sheets, or
A Weed control fabric used to prevent weeds growing through the layer, usually black and sold on rolls, 1 or 2 metres wide.

There is some discussion/argument about the need for weed control fabric:

Weed control fabric will be pointless as weeds grow into the gravel and not through it.

Undisturbed areas of gravel make an ideal growing medium for weeds as does block paving that encounters little traffic.

You are better off investing in some strong weed killer or some weed removing equipment

Gravel is a very poor surface to walk on or cycle over but is cheap as chips. It is however high maintenance and looks waz after a few seasons.

On the plus side it is easy to add more gravel and a doddle to repair.
