Oh the good 'ol days.

I wasn't sure whether this belonged in the joinery section. Look at those corner bridle joints and chamfered edges.

Removed plenty of those. Seem to remember that I did once come across some that were dovetailed and others that were made of a hardwood.

My favourite trick (perfected over many years) was to nibble these boxes out, thread a new cable down the conduit and fit a metal box - all without the need for redecoration.

One of the funniest things I saw (no camera in those days) was an old wooden box like that wired in newish T&E and the cpc was attached by a small self tapper to the back of the box!
 
I too have had to carefully remove sections of the wooden box carefully to accept a new metal box.

Also had to fit many a plastic patress over these too.

One strange thing I've seen once is a property built around 1960 with the wooden boxes and PVC oval conduit - so when it was installed the boxes were being phased out and the plastic conduit being phased in.
 
My mum still has at least one of those left in her house. A right PITA to get those little toothed things to grab the sides when fitting the switch.
