light switch with neon

Hi , can anyone tell me how to wire in a single switch with a neon to single light with just two wires at the switch a red and a black.
I am told that this type of switch is no longer available??.

Depends on how you want it to work and what type of light it is. If it is a bog standard filament lamp they connecting the neon across with switch contacts will cause the neon to illuminate when the switch is off.

i want it to illuminate when the light is left on.
It is just a standard filliment bulb.
It is for my down stairs loo , the builders who built the house put the switch on the outside in the hallway , the light is often left on accidentaly and you cant see it.

You need a neutral to do that, so no, you cannot use your Live and Switch Live (red/black).

I assume you have a single cable at the switch?

Yes toasty you could but what about just a long bit of wire and use capacitance between unmentionable and unconnected wire? Or is that as naughty?

youre getting a bit technical now - i dont fancy pulling the walls apart, might have to use plan B and put a window in the door

Sorry robbocheese was wrong of me to even suggest it. I was having a dig at toasty.
But wired across switch terminals so on when light is off would do the job as you would all know if not on then loo light is on.
There are some less bright options designed to show where the switch is and light up around the switch not switch it's self.

Why not install a light in the hallway ceiling outside the loo, connected to the one inside?

You'd be able to see that one.

As a simple compromise you could use one side of a DP switch instead of a light switch, which often have a red painted top that shows when on.

Or borrow her red nail varnish and paint the on tab part of the switch rocker red.

Or run a length of fibre optic cable to the switch plate to carry light from the lamp to the outside.

Or replace the drop cable with 3C+E so that a neutral can be taken to the switch.

If a CFL is used in the loo it might flash.


And then there's the simplest option of all - just remember to turn the ****** light off FFS - there's nothing special about the room, and nothing special about the switch being on the outside - is there something special about the occupants which stops them from learning to do what millions of other people do in all sorts of rooms, i.e. turn the light off when they leave?

I had the same problem with my loo so fitted a pir now my lazy self doesnt have to turn it on or off
