Mk Fiesta 1.3 floppy gear stick!

When I say floppy I mean it doesn't return to the centre when you put it in neutral so it is easy to try to put it in 5th rather than 3rd or reverse instead of 4th. Is this a possible DIY fix or more of a garage job? Anyone else had this problem and what was the solution? Thanks

Probably due to a broken spring in the gear lever box. Don't know whether you get to it from the top or the bottom but a close look underneath should tell you.

I expect burner man will be along shortly - he will know.

If you have a look under the car, just forward of where the gearstick rests on the floor you'll see a single rod that goes forward to the gearbox.
The earlier Fiesta's had a coil spring attached to this, going to a locator on the bodyshell.
My guess is that the ends of the spring have rusted away!
