I've just tried it out with the manufacturer figures for a few VW and BMW diesels and I don't think I'll be making the switch any time soon!

It seems that even diesels aren't that efficient once you get into brisk performance territory...

Can anyone point me at a mainstream diesel car that does 0-62 in less than 8 seconds AND does 40mpg in the urban environment?

EDIT: I've found ONE car that does it... the SAAB 9-3 1.9TTiD 180ps does 0-62 in 8.0 seconds and does 40.9mpg... Cost? £27K. Not exactly budget motoring
