Ha, the rage in the USA, if they don't declaw kitty, is to use claw caps, little bits of plastic covering the nails so they can't damage owt. They also can't retract their nails so it's pretty cruddy - though not as cruddy as declawing.
Apart from supplying lots of scratching things and perhaps a sisal scratching post next to the sofa, you could spray your new sofa in a pet repellent, something like lemon, eucalyptus or orange oil when it arrives. Doesn't need to be done everywhere, just the sides where cats tend to scratch. Fresh lemon juice may bleach the fabric, so use oil - and test in an area not on show?
Hopefully put them off at the beginning and they will learn that it's not a good place to scratch.
The other thing is buy a large blanket and throw it over - again just until the cats give up on the sofa. They don't like to get tangled up in thread. Good luck with the sofa destroyers! Luckily both my old deceased cat and the kitten have left the sofa alone but the kitten is slowly destroying the rug in the living room.

Cats are awesome & despite Dork owning several dogs, it's the cats that rule this roost.
If you want to stop your cat from clawing & destroying your furniture then you have 2x possible options . . . .
1. Don't have cats
2. Don't have furniture
There is a third option involving lemon peel, but Dork feels that anyone who is already owned by a cat is fully also aware that this approach is futile . . . .
Seriously folks, & trolling 'soshal meedya' aside, if you dare to upset the natural life of the cats, then there are more than a few of us who will walk you down the woods & leave you there.
Please don't even mention declawing. We are fully aware that you just seek attention because you lack attention in the real world & the fact that you are an attention whore instantly disbar's you from any meaningful discussion regarding cats.

Declawing has been illegal in the UK for a number of years.
And cats can be trained to not scratch furniture, well some of them anyway - they do need things they can scratch though!

Personally i would go further and depaw the cat IF it decided to claw my expensive new sofa. And if i owned such a creature. (that's if it isn't having a nervous breakdown over fireworks.. or is that dogs only)
I do own such a creature and plan on a new sofa x 2. I don't think I can declaw him.....
I need new innovative ideas. Not amputation...
