Hi guys,
Go easy on me, first time on the forum.

I am a non practicing time served spark (sold my soul and entered management  )

Anyway, my garage is on the other side of the road to my house. It is in a block of 9 garages, non of which have an electrical supply.

I would like to get an electrical supply to the garage (as would a number of the neighbours)

I have had Manweb (at least I think it was Manweb) out to give a quote which was around £2000 because they had to lift the pavement, go over the road and into the garage. The plan being to get the neighbours to chip in and get one supply carried over to all of the garages.

However I believe you can use independant contractors, who I hope will be cheaper.

Can anyone give me any advice on this project ? Does anyone know of any authorised contractors who could do this ?

thanks in advance for your help.

I think they'd need some kind of license from the council for digging the road/pavement up, and PLI and equipment for digging the road/pavements or moleing under it.

I'm not sure what sort of arrangement you're thinking about with regard to sharing the supply though. Beware friendships can turn sour when friends share things that involve money. I'd suggest getting a meter for each garage. Bear in mind, these meters are seperate from your house supplies, as they are in seperate premises. You may have to pay a standing charge etc.

£2000 doesn't seem that bad considering the work involved, I don't know any alternative contractors but would be suprised if you can get it much cheaper.

Steve,
I didn't explain myself well. I intend to get one supply and do as you state, each garage has it's own meter which will inevitably come with a seperate bill.

I don't disagree, £2000 doesn't sound too bad but as I will be running this project on behalf of my neighbours I would like to get a few quotes.

Will the supplier put you in touch with alternative contractors? I had a new gas supply recently and, while I went for national grid gas as I was happy with their quote, they would supply me with a list of alternatives as they are apparently required to do so.

Nice thinking. I will give them a ring tomorrow.

Coming to think of it, who will I be ringing. I am supplied by EON but I guess they won't run the infrastructure.

Would it be Scottish Power/Manweb.

E Uk Would it be Scottish Power/Manweb.

If they are your DNO and the ones who have already quoted you for installation then yes, I'd say they are the ones to talk to. I don't know if the rules regarding competition will be the same, but it has to be worth a try.
