I recollect that last time they had covid problems they sent lots of people back to their villages. That and other steps controlled it.

India's numbers aren't reliable. They're under testing and there's strong suspicions that they're underreporting deaths.

i fail to see how with a population as dense as it is in india, and how poor the health system is, that the numbers are not higher than has been reported. If you see the reports being made by various sources the situation looked really dire out there.

though they do have hardened immune systems out there.

Yep, that was the same study that lead PHE to increase their risk assessment. It's bad news, but only slightly bad news.
