Something like 50 per cent of drownings are accidental, people just trip or fall etc. Think how easy it is to miss the bottom step on the stairs. But it is very odd that the bench, and maybe other items have not been taken in for forensics. The police must know something they are not disclosing, or they are cocking it up big time

Someone drowned in an urban river nearby, the police and F&R specialist divers couldn't locate the person. (In desperation) they called in the local sub aqua club, who located the body within half an hour. There is an awful lot to miss even with local knowledge. Hope and pray there is closure for the family....

I had a colleague some years ago who's son sadly went missing overseas. His body was later recovered. but there was a lot of media interest. He was using Facebook messenger to communicate with his inner circle of friends/family. Journalists and Fraudsters searched him up to see who he worked with, set up fake Facebook accounts and tried to get information from him. Sick.

Mrs Motties cousin fell overboard from a sailing boat about 45 years ago. His body was never found.

most MoBs happen in the Marina (people jumping/slipping during mooring or pi**ed walking back to their boat) , but once you are out sailing. its 50/50 if you'll survive. In cold water sailing it's more like 20% for experienced properly kitted out sailors with a life vest. Rapidly drops to <10% for people in the water for more than 5-10 minutes. A good skipper will take 10 minutes to recover an MoB, if it was unexpected and they were under sail. If you are in poor conditions, short handed or can't get your engine on, you are probably looking at 15-30 minutes and may take 2 or 3 attempts.

Part of the problem is the MOB getting lost between the waves or your pointer loosing them when you turn around.
