You could try a mole wrench, or cut a slot in it & use a hammer/screwdriver

buy a new one before you take the old one off as the car will not be drivable

It is often possible to do it by taking the bottom sump plate off (catch the oil). then you can work on it in more comfort on the bench, and can apply heat without fear of setting the car alight. You can also marvel at the sludge, odd nuts and other debris that has collected in the sump over the years, and wonder where the bits came from.

yes mate ford focus its rounded off just seen a gator socket will that do it

I've not tried that. I have a good stilson that does the trick for me.

You can buy a vacuum pump to drain your oil via the dipstick, I have one of these as I have the same problem with my Escort. The pump is great as not only does it suck out all the oil but it gets all the sludge too!

Is this a male or female socket?

I would take it to someone who can tack-weld a bolt, rod or nut to the rounded doo-dah so it looks like a "handle" and then you can tap around wiith with a hammer to unscrew and bin it. Obviously keep a new replacement handy while you remove old one. Works on a Land rover...

Try not to beat it around or apply direct force, you might warp/break the sump. KERCHING!
