Parthenon Marbles

Back to the marbles.
They were stolen/traded illegally from their country of origin and should be returned.
The British Museum has already returned some artefacts to countries they were looted from, so they can't claim it is against their rules or government laws.
This country is in quite a fortunate position in that, as far as I am aware, we have not had any 'treasures' stolen and put on open display in another country. So we are not in a position to know what it feels like to have part of our history stolen and displayed by another country.
They should be returned to Greece so they can, once again, be displayed with the other artefacts they were once next to.

Yeah like the Greeks did not pinch items when they were wandering around the known world on one of there military expeditions ???

Greece was a democracy, so empire building was off the table.
Greek culture rather than military dominance created the 'Greek Empire'.

Alexander the Great spread culture through Central Asia by offering the people living there Ouzo and olive oil?
I think not.

Sunak's language unhelpful accusing greek pm of grandstanding, another example of rishy unsuccessfully trying to divert attention from asylum policy failures. Sell them back on the basis they are displayed at the BM every so often. Sell the Falklands to Argentina they must be worth a bob or two. In each case we don't have to acknowledge their territorial rights but treat it as a commercial deal.

Blup

Sell the Falklands - are you mad?
They're strategically important for the UK, providing a base in the Southern Ocean and a handy spot to explore Antarctica aand keep an eye on those Argies*...you can never be too careful.

*Fun fact #35: if you took all the European nations and squished them into shape they'd all fit inside the borders of Argentina.

Argentina is big, but if they owned the isle of wight we might have a problem. The Falklands are the last vestige of an empire whose constituent parts have declared or been given independence. It might be different if they had any strategic or resource significance. Are we going to claim Calais back?

Blup

Nonsense.
The Commonwealth is still intact as far as i know and the French can have Calais for all the use it is to us.
What difference did it make when we gave it back?
Maybe it is time for Elgin's marbles to be returned - would it make any difference to the BM?

Nonsense.

Out of 56 Commonwealth countries only 14 retain some sort of political link to UK.
And it's no longer the British Comonwealth. It's now the Commonwealth of Nations.
