please excuse me im not quite the typical dumb blonde but when it comes to electrics i'm nearly there. i have recently aquired my mums house which is 80 years old and was rewired in the 70s. earlier this year i had a new kitchen fitted and had a new fuse box fitted and the kitchen rewired but the guy who fitted it said the house isnt earthed and it needs a pme terminal and told me to contact Eon. Is this something that a NIEIEC electrician can fit? my new oven (3400 watts) which is running on a 13amp plug has blown and im wondering if this could be the problem. thank you

A 13 amp plug can only supply 3000 watts.

YOU MUST CONTACT EON IMMEDIATELY TO ARRANGE AN EARTH TERMINAL TO BE PROVIDED. IF THEY REFUSE AND SAY TO CONTACT AN ELECTRICIAN, DO THIS AND ASK THEM FOR A TT EARTH ROD.

Caps intended due to the urgency of the matter - an effective earth can save your life. I would urge you to turn off the mains immediately and not use anything. But you wont, so I wont tell you to. But get this sorted ASAP.

First of all if your installation has no main earth then it is dangerous, and your electrician should NOT have energised any part of the installation.

Second of all, you need to contact Eon and arrange for them to supply an earth terminal as a matter of urgency.

Then you need to find a new electrician who knows what he is doing to connect your installation to the earth terminal, and check what other death traps this idion has left for you.

Your cooker blowing the fuse is not related to the lack of earth, it is because you are trying to draw more than 13A through a device which will only allow you to draw 13A.

i had a feeling this was going to be the case and thank you for your speedy replies. i will get it earthed and also get the oven on a seperate ring main (although samsung told me it would be ok on a plug as it wasnt a double oven just an oven and grill)

having said this, apparently when a new ceiling rose was fitted, it had earth wires so do you think its partially earthed? could this be the case?

No. Your installation has CPCs (the earth wires at the fittings etc) but if the CPCs are not actually connected to earth at the mains, whaich it appears yours are not, then all that happens is if you get one single fault to 'earth' anywhere on your installation then every piece of metalwork will instantly come live, and will stay live until someone receives a potentially fatal shock, and you decide to sensibly turn the electricity off and wait for the ambulance to arrive.

If your installation was connected to earth, this same fault would automatically operate the device which protects that circuit within 5 seconds, but more likely less than 40mS, leaving everything safe.

So having now alerted Susy to these dangers are there any sparks on here in the Nottingham area who could help her out?
At least she may be better having someone off here than out the local rag or yellow pages.
Come on guys, damsel in distress and all that.

aww now thats really kind of you!! I live in Hucknall Nottingham
actually more worryingly its my daughter's house, my mum left it me and my daughter is living there so she really is a damsel in distress coz shes only 21 and i dont want to lose her yet!! x

The house is old enough to have had a TT supply (i.e. you supply the earth) especially if it used to be in the middle of the sticks when it was first built (???). It may be that you're relying on the earth of the water mains, or you have a stake in the ground somewhere (try and find a green/yellow wire that disappears outside).

What paperwork did your electrician give you? It'll say somewhere what sort of supply it is (TT/TN-C-S/TN-S) on the electrical installation certificate, which he should have provided you with.

Let's have some photos of your fuse board/cut-out and main earthing terminal before we jump to any conclusions on what might just be a recommendation from your electrician. The fact that he gave you an oven which is rated too high for the supply is a bit, well, worrying, but we all have our flaws.

he didnt give me anything. the oven came with the kitchen from B&Q. he was 'a friend of the fitter' (not a B&Q supplied fitter). i know i can hear you saying arrrgh but at the time i didnt know anything about what i should and shouldnt do! i will endeavour to get some photos on here but definitly no green yellow cables. the house isnt in the sticks (on a main road).

i just wanted to thank you all for your help. On Monday morning i rang an Neicic registered electrician who came out the same morning to take a look. luckily the main electric thingy where the meter etc is was fairly uptodate and had a bit on it for attaching the pme. he checked the gas and water at source and they both had earth cables ready and fitted so i rang Eon and ordered a PME terminal. the electrican gave me a price for fitting it which was about £30 as everything was already in the right place and just needed connecting up. he said once the pme terminal had been supplied he would hook it all up then do a full check of everything to make sure it was safe and give me a certificate for which he would charge about £70. so for £100 plus £155 for the pme, hopefully everything will be safe. thanks again and i know where to come to if i need another diy problem sorting

ah yes. he did . the fuse hadnt blown, but hes quoting me for putting it on a seperate main? the man who came from samsung today to look at the oven under guarantee confirmed the thermostat had blown for a 2nd time in 4 months (although the first time that was caused because samsung hadnt put any blades in the fan!!!!!) hes replaced both thermostats and all is working again. however he said it was ok on a plug so getting conflicting accounts of this but im getting it put on seperate main anyway. by the way i havent heard anything from the guy who fitted it originally, and to be quite honest i dont want to!!!!

Hi Guys, Rob you should hang your head. Susy I'm down in Notts 10 mins from Hucknall if you need me just call 07944 595142

Loads of properties around Notts with no earthing arrangements, EON are currently 4 to 6 weeks, you need a rod on a temporary basis, Hucknall should be fine for obtaining PME
