Poor kitchen wiring.

I have seen a new kitchen install today.

32A 6mm² ex-cooker circuit feeding a double socket, then on to two further points in 2.5.

Sockets less than 300mm from the cooker.

JB's under a floor not accessible from underneath (no crawl space) and being tiled over (having had hardboard laid on top of the boards).

Sockets fitted for fridge, gas cooker & d/w that are behind the appliance. Cooker & d/w have no isolation above the tops.

Joints in flex for cooker hood done in choc blocks wrapped in duck tape, left lying loose on wall unit tops.

No LABC notification and absolutely no paperwork.

Strangely, however, the installation was inspected and "passed" by an NICEIC electrician.

As an NICEIC approved contractor we receive random checks.

Does the assessor choose the job, or do you pick it for him?

The assesor picks 4 jobs.

Usually 1 new install, 2 alterations and 1 MEW.


He has access to all our certificates (they are serial numbered so no cheating) and picks what he wants.

Most customers are more than happy for him to visit as it makes sure we are working up to scratch.


If he is happy with them then that is it, if not he looks further and the visits become more frequent (Charged to us for each visit)

Lets hope the assessor picks up our friends job that SS has posted about

i'm going to write them an official letter pointing out the mistakes made & the regs flouted, to set them on their way to getting a half-decent install.

The 6mm² is an ex-electric cooker radial on a 32A breaker that feeds a 2G socket then changes to 2.5mm² to feed a spur for a hood then a socket behind the gas oven for the clock/ign.

The circuit has now been protected by a 20A MCB.
