I'm a homeowner living in a fairly old property.
I have an electrician coming next week to test all my electrics and install an up to date consumer unit.
Would it be helpful to him, if I removed all the ceiling pendant lampshades or is it not necessary?
Any other things I could be doing in preparation to make his life easier (and keep him in a good mood so he doesn't say it all needs ripping out Mrs. and you need a full rewire).

Not really. It's part of the job he's doing.

One thing you can do is to keep the surroundings clean and move obstructing objects out of the way, where the consumer unit is.

The only prep that would be useful is for you to know where all sockets , lights etc are inside, outside, garage, shed etc etc

How long do you expect said spark to be at your home ?

How many fuseboards do you have and how many circuits in the fuseboards ?

Remove all extension leads.
Electricians hate them.
And God forbid they see a daisy chain :eek::eek:

Make sure there's no junk in front of the consumer unit so he has room to work, and generally stay out of his way, and leave the chatter till after he's finished.

I have 1 fuse board but no idea how many circuits are in/on it.
The 2 chaps that did the prelim visit so he could cost the job muttered something about "not having many" when they were gazing up at it.
I've no idea how long he'll be here but he did say it would be done "in a day" and he is starting at the crack of dawn.
I know where all sockets are and he'll have a clear run to get at them.
