As energy costs increase by 80 per cent to an average of £3,549, Britons struggling to pay bills are thanking regulator Ofgem for the price cap which has done so much good.

Steve Malley of Mansfield said: “I never used to think about the energy price cap much, but now it’s turned out to be the saviour of us all.

“Just think what could have happened without it. Energy suppliers could have cranked prices up to unsustainable levels. Families could be choosing between heating or eating. We could be facing riots in the streets.

“But, thanks to Ofgem and their price cap, which they’re now allowed to raise every three months rather than six and which appears to go up by as much as energy suppliers want, none of that’s going to be happening.
“Like children in a rainstorm we’re sheltered snugly under the price cap, safe from harm, until April’s price rise takes energy up to £6,616. Where would we be without it?”

Seems the cap calculation has been changed to account for more volatility in prices which of course increases it.

Fair enough really, |If they go bust the ceo's would probably get their severance pay. A bonus if not as the cap helps keep them going,

Stop getting Uber's to and from Asda

Stop having kids they can't afford to bring up

I think it was something like 52p for electric and 15p for gas

The price of electricity will rise on average from 28p per kilowatt hour (kWh) to 52p and gas will go up from 7p to 15p per kWh

so Gas has went up by 86% and Electricity by 105%

But annually only 42% of our electricity is generated through gas.

so unless generating through nuclear, wind, solar, hydro, biomass has all doubled in price then I reckon they are pulling a fast one!

Roughly described as gas doubled and electricity a bit less.

It sounds like a lot of small businesses including shops may go bust. Chemist talking on the TV. Not a large shop. If he signs the new contract for power he thinks he wont be able to open the shop. Bill near tripled. Current one, £12k mentioned. Beeb asked to talk to the business secretary. Doesn't want to know. Letter sent back about what they had done for business costs wise which don't relate.

Wow Centrica only made £1,2b last year. Nice bit of corporation tax - I hope but we paid it.

For some (although not all) elements of this are certainly true. Links to the old 'living beyond your means' scenario.

Easy access to credit, throwaway consumer society, an attitude with some that they deserve to 'have it all' even though their bank balance says 'NO!' Folk living in a 4-5 bed detached mortgaged up to their eyeballs when in reality they could be living in a 3 bed semi. Yeah the new car thing. And on it goes.

For some however, no matter how much they trim the sails, they still can't make ends meet. For them, these increases could be more than worrying.

I believe the word you are looking for is 'profiteering'...

Although it is of course part of the 'great reset'!
