The Bi in bicycle (often corrupted to bike) stands for two (two wheels?), the Tri in Tricycle stands for three, and Quad stand for 4.
That was my original point of saying what is a quad bike, it is a misnomer, we all use misnomers quite commonly, I do so myself.
I was just pointing that out for a giggle to make folk think. Yes we all do such thinks, use daft words and expressions out of context.
If we all spoke/write exactly correctly all of the time it would be a very sad world.
One very common expression is "Give it me!" we really mean "Give me it" or "give it to me". Quite clearly. There are times when we know what was actually intended. Occasionally some expressions can be taken either way and still make sense therefore we might be unsure whether someone means what they actually said or they actually meant it the other way around. I know someone who habitually speaks back to front, if they always did so always every time then it would make life easier but sometimes they actually say things the correct way around and if you think "Hmm, which way do they mean this" and you are not sure because either could be meant then I`ve seen it cause confusion and a complete misunderstanding.
I reckon we all know what is actually meant by "Quad Bike" .

I once, years ago, saw a machine drawing by a brilliant draughtsman , a good quality detailed drawing of a machine with all sorts of hilarious terms written into it. I particularly remember some parts named "adjustable adjustments" whilst other parts were named "non-adjustable adjustments" . Rather than refer to them as "adjustments" and "presets", there were other nonsense terms too, it was a brill drawing, a right good laugh and it looked so highly technical.

Anyway, I was just trying to add a little bit of mirth into an everyday term.

In my own field I hear incorrect names and expressions such as "Live" and "Neutral " whereas it should be "Line" and "Neutral" and they are both "Live" because they both carry current as part of their intended function.
"Spur" is another one = people usually mean a "Switched Fused Connection Unit" and it is often used with a "Spur" (Spur being the part of the circuit wiring and not the unit itself).
In the plumbing world the words "Sink" and "hand basin" (or lavatory hand basin) are often confused, I know of one firm who deliberately use this confusion to make a bit more money, I think that a bit naughty.
When a customer says their sink tap is leaking they run a water tap on the sink (usually in the kitchen) and replace the washer on that tap, send a bill for the job and then get told the tap is still leaking, they then get told the customer means the sink in the bathroom not the kitchen. The plumber retorts that the customer said "Sink" which is in the Kitchen and in the bathroom there is a "Lavatory Hand Basin" not a sink! No doubt they had actually run that one too therefore knew it was passing water but deliberately done the job the customer did not actually intend then it created two jobs and two separate callouts hence more money - A bit naughty to do it deliberately as a job creation exercise.

People use incorrect terms quite frequently but we usually as questions to verify what they actually mean if there is any room for confusion if we are playing fairly.

why do you say Bike is not short for bi-cycle? Are you saying the word has evolved?
I remember carmen agreeing with a poster that car wheels are held on with friction and wheel nuts play no part in this!!

I think he thinks I’m trying to trap him.

I’m personally ok with the idea that bike has evolved from bicycle.

Languages evolve. The origin of bike is clearly bicycle.

No I'm just wondering if you understand the difference between nouns and adjectives

Well then, lots of folk say they are Hoovering up, but in fact they are not hoovering, they might be Panasonicing or Dysoning. Uou can only be hoovering if you are using a hoover , OK we know what they mean. Even though it is the wrong term.

Words and their meanings change over time with use and misuse

A quad bike is a specific thing, recognised by most people for what it is. A 4 wheeled bike, not a 4 wheeled bi cycle
