I read once (possibly apocryphal) that a lab with CO2 lasers (the beams of which are invisible, and very powerful) had a sign saying:

WARNING

Invisible CO2 laser beams.

Do not place any part of your body in the path of the invisible laser beam. If you do, the pain and the smell of burning flesh will let you know that this has happened.
