The supply to my old hob has its own small tap underneath the hob. Is it ok to simply turn off the gas using this tap & disconnect the hob, only getting Gas Safe plumber in to refit? Or do I need to get them in to put a temporary cap on?

no its not ok, its classed as immediately dangerous. You must get someone in to disconnect it. im sure if you find someone local they will give you a good price to disconnect and reconnect and probably won't be much different to just the reconnecting.

No, gas safe plumber required, don't just disconnect and rely on the closed valve.
