Hi guys, newbie here, all help appreciated.

Im looking to replace a ceiling light but after taking off the light fitting there are only two black wires showing, no red of blue or earth, any ideas about how to fit them, will i blow myself up if i wire them incorreclty??

Thanks in advance

Hmmm sounds like your wiring may be a little old and possibly not safe, but i could be wrong.

Can you post a picture of the wiring so we can see what wires you have?

Could be the end of a radial. One is neutral, the other an unmarked switchwire.

Could it be that the person who fitted this luminaire stuffed the live loop & earths up into the ceiling void as they were not required & got in the way?

If you cannot find an earth connection, you CANNOT fit a metal fitting.

yeah,the last two answers.

maybe the earths are stuffed in the ceiling with the reds

If you cannot find an earth connection, you CANNOT fit a metal fitting.
You can if it's double insulated.

And before anybody pops up to moan, I'm not splitting hairs - you can get DI metal luminaires - it's not the metallic construction that matters, it's that little symbol consisting of two concentric squares...

You will probably find the "unused" permanent lives and earths pushed up into the ceiling!!

If you find the earth cut off, or earths not connected, then be suspicious of them - don't just connect it/them and assume all is well.

They are of life-saving importance (yes, really), and the sort of person who would not maintain their continuity is not the sort of person to whose competence or care you would want to trust your life...
