Hi all,

First of all let me start off by apologising for what is probably going to be a barrage of stupid questions.

I have decided to re-decorate the spare room in preperation of our new arrival (due 5th feb).

I want to replace the existing light switch with a metal dimmer

Existing Shaving socket with a metal blank plate

existing plastic blank plate with a metal blank plate.

but one at a time and lets start with what i expect to be the easiest.

The replacing of the blank plate (not even sure why it's actually there)

I have removed the plastic cover and noticed there are 3 wires hanging down,

1 Red
1 Black
1 Brown

about 1cm of copper cable showing on each!

Also i notice on the new metal plate there is a terminal for one of the wires, I presume it's for the earth but are any of the above the earth??

can someone point me in the right direction as to what i need to do and do it safely??

Thanks

Steve

Is there any chance you could post a photo of the offending wiring? (Click my signature to find out how)

You are right in thinking that you should connect the metal plate to earth, but you seem to have an unusual arrangement of wires.

Ok, I hope this works.

Thanks

put the red wire into a terminal block & the black wire into a terminal block, then put a piece of green/yellow sleeving on the bare copper wire, & connect it to the earth terminal on the blank plate.

Nice one, Thanks for all the reply's.

The brown cable does look like it bare copper in the photo but is actually covered with a brown sleeve, would this be ok to use without the need for the green/yellow sleeve.

Thanks

I could be talking ******, looks like the brown is bare, I will check this when i get home.

Greenroomboy, that definitely is a bare CPC, green/ yellow sleeve and terminate.

Best of luck with the new arrival, I've got 2 under 30 months, forget sleeping for the foreseeable future.

PS they're great!!!!

Yep, you are absolutely spot on, closer inspection confirms the cable is bare!!!

Cheers everyone, much appreciated!!!!!!!!
