Should I be concerned???

I always understood that a quote was a fixed price so, the price should still be £27,000 for the whole job. How much he takes for labour out of that is irrelevant really as the price to you is still the same.
No?
Anyway, I would be suspicious of a person who moves the goalposts after making an agreement.

Yeah but if he was making £20k on the labour and spending £7k on materials which have now gone up, it'll be eating into his whack. OP should get another quote or two if he's not happy.m

A bathroom fit out / materials only will be well over 3 grand these days . That leaves you under 4 for a kitchen based on his original quote.
He’s realised he wants more money and this is the way he’s going about it.
He’s safeguarding himself against material cost rises but upping the labour cost as well.
F@@k him off sharpish , he’s the type to slap another 5k on before he’s finished.

I am always suspicious of people who ask for a breakdown of a quote

A break down of say a 5000 £ job is as follows

to do the job is £5000

to not do the job is zero

About the only breakdown they would get

there after they would be politely told to go and do one ;)

Than you get the idiots who say they will supply all the materials :ROFLMAO:

so you just turn up with yer tools

***l ends :ROFLMAO:

gas
flux
Screws
Solder
Fixings
Ect ect are not matreials in there world

Agree with no-links-transam on this one.

Some customers ask for itemised quoting then think they can cherry pick the profitable bits away from the contractor. I'd rather forfeit the entire job (and have done).

Its not easy to break a price down -generally Ive always built the pricing with net material costs, net labour costs, then add contingency for grey areas, then add margins

breaking down a quote in components becomes awkward as the margins are based on the whole job -often margins arent split equally across each element of the work, splitting the price makes it awkward to apportion the margins.

Caution advised

Re the materials, they are shooting up and in shorts supply. Be very aware of what materials you are getting as you may end up with cheap, nasty stuff so agreements required and an idea of price as you do not want to be paying xxx for crap materials or tens of thousands for a top flight materials that may not fit in with your property, no offence EG - Hob costing 8k when you can easily get a decent one sub 2k

as an example
A reel of solder has increased in price in the last few days ? By 48% at city plumbing

Labour + materials at cost @ time of delivery is becoming common - particularly with the rapid price changes at present.

Chap I know is now only giving quotes on Labour & consumables only. Materials at cost when delivered to site. He includes a material order list with the quote so the customer can order the materials themselves before he starts if they wish.
He also suggests they get the orders in early to ensure delivery before he starts and reduce the costs particularly if they can store the materials.

Charge for the itemised quote - Admin charge, refundable if quote is accepted. Similarly an admin charge if customer wants a detailed breakdown of material costs. Had one customer who counted the number of screws, nails, tubes of 'gunge' used and wanted such pricing per piece! Took 4 hours to complete. Even questioned what I'd done with the off-cuts.

Such customers are a PIA!
