So it’s looking like Starmer could have stopped the Lords appointment once he found out about Doyle despite lying to the contrary.

If you're that depressed about the future you may as well just vote Reform. Even if you don't think they'll succeed at the very least you know they haven't (yet) failed, they're our one and only remaining chance.
His strategy is to weather the storm, but the alternatives of a GE and/or a leadership contest will be fixed in the mind of the MPs who might be tempted to bring him down.
He wouldn't be seeking to survive it.
The logic is that he threatens the labour party with an election, knowing that they'll almost all lose their seats. It's speculated that this is exactly what happened the other day, when they all suddenly tweeted their support within an hour.
It's a threat to hang over them all - support me or I'll burn the house down with us all in it. He apparently does have the power to single-handedly call an election. As long as his party knows this and thinks he might do it then they'll all pretend to support him, as they now are.
They're probably trying to work out whether they can remove him quickly enough that he can't call an election before it happens. But nobody wants his job until after May anyway, they want him to carry the can before they dispose of him.

I do wonder if Starmer resigns who would replace him - I don't see anyone in the present mob who could be effective and less damaging to the national economy.

That tiny minority of noisy lefties are utterly convinced that they are right even when everyone else disagrees. They're going to be screaming and shouting all over the place, protesting about everything. It will be like a massive national teenage tantrum of "it's not fair".
Lefitness is so ingrained within tiers of government. Entire departments, possibly even the police, may refuse to get into line.
It could all get way less stable than things are now.

I never understood British voters.
