I mean is this dull or what?

but anyway I have a white double pattress box on which is presently mounted a single push on/off dimmer (from home automation)

and I want to replace the dimmer with a single on/off switch. But it does not seem to be possible to buy a faceplate with a single on/off swich designed to live on a double pattress.

I mean I could buy a 3 gang switch - but then you have to explain to people that two of them switches just shouldn't be there ...

There must be a simple solution out there?

You could go for a 3 gang "grid" switch and insert 2 blanks in the other inserts.
Or you could change to a single patriss
