Right, first off my thanks for all the information I have read from this forum,

It has helped me on numerous occasions and often the humour is as good as the advice!

I often find myself reading posts I have no practical interest in! If ever you have any questions on train driving just ask.

I am in the process of sorting my kitchen, and doing the first fix (my electrician will do 2nd fix and certified it) Can I check on safe zones around the sink, I believe its 600mm Does this have to include the draining board or just the sink and is it applicable to FCS as well as D/S

As a second question (once you start its hard to stop)

I am replacing a gas cooker with an electric oven (3.3 kw) and ceramic hob (6.6 kw) wired through a cooker outlet, 45A D.P. switch, about 11m cable run to CU. Using 10.0mm cable, running in plaster and through joists. Is this the right size and would it need a 40A or 50A MCB?

There are no defined safe zones as such with a kitchen sink, but the recommended distance is 300mm horizontally from the edge of the sink unit (this includes the draining board).

There is no proper definition in BS7671, but I would think this includes ALL electrical accesories due to the increased risk of them being splashed, or the increased temptation for them to be operated with wet hands.

As for your oven and hob, I work it out that it will use a combined load of approx 43A (without applying diversity), so fit the 50A MCB to supply the combined load.

I would also suggest you feed the oven via an FCU as the supply flex is unlikely to be >1.5mm², which is very undersized for the 50A MCB.

You may want to double check with your electrician to make sure he is happy with your proposals before you get too far.

Sorry RF how very rude of me not to have thanked you for your advice!

My apologies,

I am a very slow worker and I’m still doing my kitchen, I have a lot of holes and channels in my walls but no wires yet!
