Small boat crossings

If it wasn't so attractive to come here they wouldn't all head to France....as highwayman said yesterday.

Surely Macron should give starmer a good telling off? Stop being such a soft touch man...

That is certainly the narrative being pushed by the French. I am as keen as anyone to solve this problem. I have been trying to get information about what ways are we a soft touch. In France I believe it is easier for asylum seekers to work legally than in the UK. On the other hand, for some reason many think it is easier to work here in the black economy. But why is that. What is France doing that we are not to clamp down on illegal working. There are so many factors.

Well they’re not putting them up in hotels for a start. Perhaps we should fence off a piece of scrubland and let them live in their own filth until their claim is decided?

I have just been reading that France house asylum seekers in decent conditions in reception centres. It seems the idea that they leave them to live in filth is a myth.

That’s only those seeking asylum in France. Even then, they only have capacity for around a third of them. They don’t house them if they have not applied for asylum and are hiding out waiting to cross the channel - why would/should they?

I found that article quite confusing. It is written by a student and seems to contain a lot of personal opinion. Google AI says that those who have applied for asylum in France are legally entitled to accommodation and when the reception centres are full they use hotels instead. But getting accurate information does seem difficult. That is often the case with issues like this :(

Should be easy for starmer to figure out he could just ask macron....maybe

I was watching a news prog yesterday and they were discussing the crisis. One of the talking heads said they want to come here in part (through other countries) due to us being an English speaking nation i.e. some of them are coming from countries we colonised where English is widely spoken. In addition, many of them now have family members here, adding to the draw.

I've heard the latter being discussed before i.e. they have family members here. That to me seems the start of an almost never ending situation, especially if it aids their right to remain.

One thing is for sure. Whether we like it or not, the migration of people legal/illegal is going to increase quite significantly in years/decades to come if the experts are to be believed. So, globally, leaders need to be addressing this and coming up with a more joined up cohesive approach. Heck, why did I type that last bit ... like that will ever happen!

A couple of people on this thread have suggested that ID cards would help. But I don't know whether it is that simple. Why would an illegal employer be bothered about checking an ID card.
And how soon would it be before genuine looking fakes were available, even when scanned.

We know the 'industries' in which they work, so easy for the police etc., to ask for an ID card, no card arrest them, and fine the employer for employing illegals. ID cards, ought to have been introduced decades ago, in the UK.

The cards would be referenced and they would be able to confirm they were genuine, in an instant. They know whether your car is taxed, insured, MOT'ed, and the owners details, long before they decide to pull you up these days, .
