Hello.

Which spelling is correct?

I looked in the dictionary, and both are listed.

A machine which blows hot air onto your hands when they are wet.

a) Hand Dryer

b) Hand Drier

:?:

To my mind, hand dryer would be correct, although I can't provide any evidence - it's purely opinion. The other spelling would be used to say "my hands are drier than yours".

Drier - usually refers to when things are not as wet i.e. they are drier.
Whereas Dryer - comes from the word dry, therefore a machine to dry your hands (IMO) should be a dryer! I.e. it is a 'doing' word, if that makes sense.

Phew

The more I looked at it, the more it looked wrong to me

a/ without a doubt.

Now get them screws in and don't forget to dress them!

That'll do for me then :D

I can't screw the FCUs up. I haven't even wired them yet

I shall ask my father.

He's been an English teecher all his life, teachin English as a forin langwidge and now has a PhD.

EDIT:

He is of the opinion that "Dryer" is for the appliance.

My Collins Eng. Dict. lists "drier, driest" and "dryer, dryest".

He suspects "dryest" may be US English.
