Starmer abandons plans to cancel local elections.

WOW
Reform and the Liberal Democrats, who had branded the delays undemocratic and an attempt to stop their parties making gains, welcomed the move.
Reform leader Nigel Farage, writing on X, external, said: "We took this Labour government to court and won.

"In collusion with the Tories, Keir Starmer tried to stop 4.6 million people voting on May 7th. Only Reform UK fights for democracy."

The government has agreed to pay Reform's legal costs relating to the proceedings, which a party source said would be at least £100,000.

So another Starmer U turn

The public deserve the opportunity to see how terrible Reform are in local government.

It could be the plan - let them have a load of councils and then jump on and amplify every single misdemeanour - bank it and save it as ammunition for the general election. It may work but after the local council elections it wont be Starmer’s problem as he will be gone and working for some EU or human rights organisation as soon as he is allowed.

As the PM is/was a lawyer it seems reasonable to conclude that he knew this was unlawful from the start, he just didn't think anyone would challenge him.

All good for reform. Do the labour party have no limit to just how terrible a leader they will endure?

Cue the muppets saying waa waa the government didn't choose to delay elections, it was all due to reorganisation bla bla bla. Utter rubbish, we all know exactly why they were being cancelled.

Nothing illegal about delaying an election that would have seen councillors voted in for 12 months or so. Kieth has judged it’s better to judge the enemy in full battle.

Have to admit, whether local council and/or UK government, I wouldn't really expect Reform to be dramatically better than any of the established parties. To what extent they might be worse time will tell depending on what local/national power they gain.

I think, in a sense, Reform can already have their excuses/reasoning in place if they do gain power and don't deliver. For example, if they propose radical changes to immigration and can't get the law passed, they can say 'well, we tried, can't blame us' which to varying degrees may indeed be a valid position.

At the end of the day, yes there is financial waste by councils and government, however regardless of who is in power, they ultimately have to try and deliver the same sort of stuff with the same pot of money.

What's the saying? There's only so many ways you can slice a cake.

Note the above is not an anti Reform post. Simply my view that our current political system most likely won't deliver any significant improvements any time soon, regardless of who's in power.

And I thought the cancellations were nothing to do with Reform's huge popularity MNW?

I thought they were necessary changes for the benefit of the country, and were planned long before Reform existed Noseall?

Notch?

Where are you Notch?

Come on Blup, surely you don't believe that. He was heading for another loss in court and he has agreed to pay costs.
