Sue Gray

This is the special kangaroo court set up by the Conservatives to try to discredit her?

Surely there is an established Civil Service process that should be used?

"Last week, the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (Acoba) said Ms Gray had to wait until September to start her new role with Labour.
Ms Gray told Acoba she received a call from Sir Keir in October last year, when he raised the idea of her working for Labour in a senior capacity.
The committee said it was "quite normal for individuals to discuss the possibility of new roles before leaving office" but "any potential conflict must be declared".
The committee said there was no evidence her contact with Labour had impacted her actions in her civil service role or her ability to remain impartial."

Report published in full, May 2022.

On 8 December 2021, Boris Johnson announced an investigation into allegations that Christmas parties in November and December 2020 broke the government’s own Covid rules. The PM announced the investigation after a video emerged of former spokesperson Allegra Statton discussing the parties in a mock press conference.

The investigation was completed in January 2022 but, following the decision of the Metropolitan Police to investigate the breaches of Covid laws, Gray’s full report was put on hold and a short ‘update’ was published on 31 January 2022.

she received a call from Sir Keir in October last year

Perhaps Mottie can tell us about the time machine he thinks enabled the call to affect an investigation carried out a year before.

Sorry, I was out racing over the weekend, so didn't see the update. Looks like the truth is out there...

The beeb is running the naughty Sue Story

So is Sky news..

The mail

The independant

and the spectator

Even the Guardian

A government source told Sky News that the findings of the investigation - carried out by civil servants, not ministers - would have resulted in "serious disciplinary sanctions" if Ms Gray had still been working in Whitehall.
:D

Is all you can say...

when the truth is out there - Naughty Sue broke the rules and probably would have been sacked.

I see naughty motorbiking is quoting only reports of what the Conservative kangaroo court said.

I suppose he is backing away from his earlier smears that Gray was influence by Starmer while investigating Johnson.

"However, the appointments watchdog said it had seen “no evidence” that her decision making or impartiality was “impaired” while serving in Whitehall. It only advised a six-month pause from her last day, meaning she can start with Sir Keir in early September."

According to you she didn't break the rules?

You appear to be smearing the civil service by calling them "Conservative kangaroo court"

when in fact

Set up by the government, using the Cabinet Office, rather than using established Civil Service processes.

"Several former and current permanent secretaries have privately expressed the view that Case should not stay in his job, after presiding over too many controversies and failing to stand up for the interests of the civil service.

One Whitehall expert said Case needed to show leadership at a time when the civil service was facing a time of great difficulty with “workforce management, morale and relations with ministers”.

The Cabinet Office report, which ministers are understood to have wanted to be made public, is said to have found that she breached the rules by holding talks with Labour about the new role without informing civil service bosses in advance.

Sources suggested that despite originally backing publication, Case had become uncomfortable that a senior official could face such an investigation after they had already left the civil service, with the Cabinet Office so far unable to explain under what process the inquiry took place.

Senior civil servants were also said to have been concerned about releasing such a politically charged report just days before the local elections, potentially in breach of purdah rules, and the wider implications of publicly discussing the confidential details of a former employee.

Allies of Gray said the investigation, which they claim was politically motivated as she had not worked in a sensitive role for five years, was designed to put pressure on Acoba to delay her start date. While the report on Gray’s departure is separate from the body’s deliberations, it was due to be submitted as evidence."

"Robert Peston reported that Gray suspended cooperation with the Cabinet Office investigation because she found out it was already using information – on dates of her meetings with Starmer, for example – that she had supplied to Acoba via the Cabinet Office.

“She viewed this, understandably, as a breach of process and confidentiality,” he tweeted. “Gray’s views were … relayed to the Cabinet Secretary, Simon Case, who agreed with her. Which is why it was impossible for Dowden to publish a report....on whether she breached the civil service code, in spite of weekend briefings that publication was imminent.”

Yep - all nails in her coffin. and confirms she was secretly briefing the press.

According to you she didn't break the rules?

It is also perfectly reasonable to conduct an inquiry in to the conduct of a former employee. Learn lessons, update training, brief leaders and take legal action against the ex-employee if needed.
