Didn't make much progress on the cistern. Followed the advice here and this is what I ended up with. Wasted a trip going to toolstation and buying the wrong size BSP in 1 inch, which wouldn't fit the hole in the cistern, so I had to go back and replace it all for a 3/4 version. I'm really not happy about the plastic washer but wasn't prepared to pay £7 for a pack of 100 rubbers ones when I only need 2. Not sure how the plastic is going to cope with repeated freeze thawing.

Just leaving the water to sit to test for drips. Nothing so far but will see how it goes over a week. Worst case scenario I'll just have to find a 3/4 rubber washer and change it over.

Going to look online for some bamboo guttering for a more ecofriendly option to conventional plastic. Given I only need 2.2metres of half round and about 1.2metres of full round.

Can someone check and see if this calculation is correct? :

I want to cover 2 beds at 0.75m + a 0.35m path in between, which totals 1.85m or let's say 2metres.

Using the height, allowing for 0.75 metre (taken as the radius).

To work out the circumference of the ****terly drawn semi-circle above, it's 2PR

And so 2 x 3.142 x 0.75 = 4.7 metres of netting needed to cover over the arch. Is this correct ?

Obviously onions will not reach even close to 0.75 metres at full maturity, but as I am making all the beds a standardised size now, I need to have enough height to cover all of the shorter cropping veg: onions, garlic, beetroot, celery, lettuce.

Taller plants like those from the brassicas, will likely need separate netting per bed. So I won't get away with netting 2 beds at once like I can here.

A 350mm wide path is perfectly adequate to walk along, unless you are mordibly obese or suffering from a physical incapacity. Do you ? We know you have a mental one.

With a circumference of 2m, and therefore an assumed height of 1m to make the calculations easier, it'd be 2PI R divided by 2 for just half a circle. So that just make 3.142; and having a height of just .75m, you may get away with 3m of netting.

It is not disconcerting to talk to someone online who has not thought something through properly. I do it all the time.
