Donald Trump has warned he could rip up his trade deal with Britain as tensions rise between the US and UK over the Iran war and its economic fallout.
The US president said the trade deal, agreed with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in May 2025, “could be changed”, as he continued to fulminate against a lack of support from London in the conflict with Tehran.
The trade deal, which provided relief for UK carmakers and to the steel and aluminium sectors, has been hailed by Starmer as one of his biggest economic achievements since becoming prime minister in 2024.
But Trump said it was “sad” that the bilateral relationship had deteriorated after Starmer refused to join the war against Iran. “We gave them a good trade deal, better than I had to, which can always be changed,” he told Sky News.
“It’s the relationship where when we asked them for help, they were not there when we needed them.” He added: “They were not there and they still aren’t there.”
At Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday, Starmer responded by saying he would “not get dragged into this war, it is not our war”.
