Hi all,

Sorry to post a problem which is probably quite routine. I've looked for answers but the wiring seems to be different in every example.

First of all, the thermostat is a Timeguard TRT033, the boiler is a Glow Worm Flexicom 24 cx.

I just tried firing up the central heating for the first time since moving into this rented place. The heating came on, however the boiler indicated that it was receiving demand even once the temperature in the house went way above what was on the thermostat, and the thermostat itself is not signalling that it is requesting heat. If I do turn the thermostat way up, it clicks on and off fine.

I tried taking the thermostat off the backplate to look at the wiring, however it doesn't match other descriptions such as on the wiki of this website. There are four wires: brown, black, green/yellow, and white. Brown is connected to COM, black is connected to NO, and green/yellow is connected to what looks like an earth symbol (you can just make it out in the picture below). The white wire is not connected to anything.

I tried opening the boiler to see what was at the other end of each wire, however the connection point is not accessible. I did take the cover off, and open the control console, but there is another unit inside which sits between it and the big grey wire that comes out of the boiler, so I can't say for sure which wires match up, and regardless they are pretty much unlabelled. I'll include an image anyway.

Can anyone help me? Thanks so much.

Call your landlord it's up to him/her if there is a fault, or to provide operating instructions for use.

I have a service contract on my rental property so the tenant can contact British Gas directly if there is a problem, I wouldn't expect or indeed want them to do anything to the heating system themselves :D

Regards,
footprints

You sound like a good landlord ;). Ours are pretty hands-off, and they take forever to respond to us. If it's a simple case of switching two wires round then I'm happy to just do it myself and save them the trouble. I'm the one living here, having to put up with either the cold or having crazy fluctuating heat! Of course if it's beyond my ability, and/or there is any risk of me damaging the equipment or myself then of course I'll go via them (and then after a couple of weeks of nothing and freezing to death I will probably end up getting someone qualified in myself!).

The earth green wire is just parked there, the other two are simply connected by a switch in the stat changing them would not solve anything.

Leave the wiring as it is, either the stat is faulty or the boiler is firing up for some other reason.

It may be a fault on a valve, but too many possibilities really.

If it has a valve that has "gone walkabout" it would keep giving heating even if the timer and thermostat were removed :D

Sorry if I sound negative but chasing your landlord/agent is really the way to go.

Haha no problem :). That's fine if that's the case. If it's a job for a proper plumber then I'll get in touch with the landlord.

It was this thread that made me think it might be a simple fix with the wiring. http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=285734

But if the wiring is fine (and in my case it does seem like I've got an earth wire going to the dud terminal, whereas in this guy's he has a useful one) then I'll get on to them.

Thanks for the advice :).

All these things I'm completely oblivious to... I hear valves and I assume plumber. Thanks for the correction! :D
