Make conditions much tougher for those who get here and see if that has a deterrent effect.

Personally I'd be asking what his plans actually are. Making sure they aren't just hot air.

I don't know. Maybe they thought the problem would reduce, whereas it just seems to be getting worse. Having said that, numbers entering Europe did drop by 40% last year, so maybe things will start to improve soon.

The Tories did have a plan to use disused airbases etc. as basic accommodation, but there was a lot of local resistance. But that might have been because the asylum seekers were free to leave during the day. Nobody has yet proposed confining them en masse. Maybe that is the next stage to be proposed.

As regards pushback, it has worked for Italy, but only with the full cooperation of the North African countries. France aren't going to assist us in that way.
