Hi,
I have a young neighbour who wants to become a plumber now that he has left school.
Basic question is, can anyone suggest a pathway from where he is now to becoming a plumber? At present he feels that he want to be self-employed.
Any recommendations re training establishments would also be much appreciated as would any other guidance.
I'm retired and therefore more than a tad out of touch with this sort of thing but at the same time would like to be able to give him some guidance.

Thanks,
John B.

To many experienced people in the industry that is the worst possible situation of somebody who wants to be self employed and not to get adequately trained.

The traditionay way to be a good plumber is to do a proper aprenticeship which will take three years to have the basic qualifications but not gas!

The Screwfix forum has many arguments about this problem.

Try C.I.T.B or JTL

I agree

also try some of the BIG home builders (wimpey bryant persimmonds etc) as their training is good he would be very lucky to get on wif one of those boys

:)

Having just left school I'd reccommend he goes for an apprenticeship. If I had my time again I'd be straight onto a youth scheme with one of the big firms...
That way he will get training, qualifications, tools and hopefully a guaranteed job at the end of it. That way he can build up experience at the expense of a big company rather than at his own expense...

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies.
I will give him all your comments and then he will have to decide which way he goes.

Thanks again,
John B.
