Approx' 9 out of 10 items are said to be shipped around the world on board some of the biggest
dirtiest machines on the planet.

It has been estimated that just one of these container ships , the length of 6 football pitches can produce the same amount of pollution as 50 million cars's.

The emmissions from 15 of these mega ships , match those from all the cars in the world.

If the shipping industry was a country it would be ranked between Germany & japan as the 6th biggest contributer to global CO2 emissions .

And the d**kheads that run the show are talking aboutg banning diesel cars. The mind boggles.

No question we need to have a serious look at ourselves and how we live in the west, and we still aren't doing it.

most ships burn or use "bunker fuel" . Its the dregs left over at the end of the refinery process.

Its an environmental disaster. It is heavy and toxic , does not evaporate. and emits more sulphur than other fuels.

all this pollution occurs out at sea , out of sight out of mind ???

not just container ships , what about these ocean liners , with thousands of people on board .

In China they have the 1st electric cargo ship . it can do 50 miles on one charge. Its used on the pearl river . BUT

it is used to transport coal to local power stations

They won't ban fook all. Just increase the tax on them. Have you not noticed the pattern yet??

Exactly, carbon credits don't stop anyone polluting, they just lets them pay someone else to plant a few trees to supposedly, offset the pollution. Doubt if any of those ships pay carbon credits though.

How can they seriously expect us to cut pollution when our population has grown by about 5 million in a few years?
Population is a none issue when it comes to pollution:

-This is about world population, but when we talk about shipping pollution, it is far more relevant than what happens in the UK.

What matters is economic growth, and how we deal with our resources. We consume more, and so we pollute more. We have more consumable items than we did 40 years ago, we buy more gadgets, more toys for our kids, buy more cloths, buy more food from abroad (although the carbon footprint can be lower than UK grown), and plastic has taken over from many materials in our society.

But even if what you say was relevant, why would it stop us from trying to tackle pollution? It wouldn't of course. Just because there is more than one cause, does not mean we can only tackle one of them at a time.

Oh, and 10 years is more than a few years.

Not comparable, as the bans on diesels are for specific areas in cities currently*, for public health reasons, whereas issues with ship pollution is more widespread.

They are not talking of banning diesels outright currently.

It would be interesting banning diesels though, as many industrial sites do not allow petrol cars, owing to explosive atmospheres.

* - Although there is talk of outright ban by 2040, which is a long way off.
