goto tell u this has got me totally stumped ,hopefully my friend mate is coming down tues to do the wiring for the y plan fitted im sure ive got it sused but ill let him sort it plus hopefully he can shed somelight on this strange problem

so the installation is not complete,is the y plan valve already fitted.

I suppose if its still off you could do a "finger torque test" !

Is there any kind of bypass or short circuit between flow and return which could be reducing the effective pumping head?

Tony

not sure really dont think so its a new valve suppose i could put a 90 comp bend on and do away with the cylinder to try

Haven't read all the posts (so you may ignore this if previously covered) but you've just said you have a three port and you have the lever switch to the manual position.

Therfore the water will be flowing around the radiator AND the cylinder circuits.

Unless you have a lockshield valve on the cylinder circuit (to throttle down the flow) most of the flow will be around the cylinder and not the radiators.

maybe having valve in manual mid position there is insufficient force to clear air lock as there is more force whilst in heating only mode.
is y plan valve correctly plumbed in.
when you stripped out the old pipe work did you find the anti gravity valve,i have found these under the first floor floorboards.

This is the first I have heard of the three port valve actually being installed !

I thought the problem was occuring when there was no valve fitted?

Certainly if the valve has always been in circuit then as stated above if the cylinder has always been open to the flow then if you have not fitted a gate valve to restrict the flow and balance the flow between heating and cylinder there may be insufficient remaining pump head to get any flow down to the ground floor rads.

hi tony i can do as you ask i think .. this pump is a two speed pump selectable speed in he onboard computor .which part acually should i remove , i take it i will need to drain again

The pump is not just a 2 speed selectable speed pump. It is adjusted by heating demand. Yes it can be overridden. What is d10 reading when boiler is running? If you have a small circulation circuit and the boiler has heated up and therefore modulated down the pump speed will decrease automatically. Try setting boiler to SF6 which will run everything at full power.

The pump is set by going into the second level diagnostics.

From further posts I now think the problem lies with the 3 port valve not being wired up. I wish we had known that at the start.

Remove the valve head and set shaft manually to heating only position, ignore the manual lever on the actuator.

If I remember correctly the manual lever at rest is heating port closed and moved over is then heat + HW.

That means the cylinder is always connected and without a lockshield setting valve will be shortcircuiting the heating circuit.

He said he was "very compitent".

Yes I believe you are correct Tony, that is why I suggested removing the actuator completely  I don't know of any valve that can be manually set to heating only with the head on :? It needs electric to do this.

I think he must be very confused by now

If the diverter valve is a Honeywell you could remove the actuator and use molegrips/string to hold the valve in the heating only position. Other valves (shoe type) can be set in the correct position by setting the valve shaft across the pipe? (or is that inline?)
