Is it a shrew? I saw it laying, dead, on the track over the field when I was walking the dog this morning. It was really tiny, probably less than half the size of my finger.

It somewhat resembles the mighty Elephant Shrew, which is seldom seen in the UK and is neither an elephant nor a shrew, but has an evolutionary link to manatees.

If you confuse the common Shrew with the Elephant Shrew then there is no harm done.

But if you confuse the Elephant Shrew with an Elephant then you could be in serious trouble.

I know someone who made that mistake.

it looks like a 60 year old finger to me....not sure its dead though

It's pebblus minimus brownus. Highly toxic to small furry animals who often keel over and die just at the sight of it. Keep that dog back FFS.
