I've never cooked one but they come in all sizes from apple size to ones as big as a mini. As long as they are ripe there should be no problem. When the plant dies off, they will be ripe. Usually around now.

The plant is very much alive. They are about the size of a very big very big tomato

When the leaves die off, you can eat it. My ones over the allotment died off a few weeks ago. I’m just leaving them there until our Grandson can carve a face on them for Hallow'een.
