What is Culture?

English culture is unique. It's shaped through centuries of being secure from invasion and through the language we speak. This contributes to the national character that most unconsciously have. It's fast being eroded by eastern influences which will continue to ruin this once great country.

Tea drinking
Self deprecating
Pothole avoiding
Saying sorry, please
Love of queuing
Cricket loving
Walking t'dog
Not complaining
Stiff upper lip
Dry wit and humour
Gardening crazy
Politeness
Seasonal traditions
Ability to buy fireworks year round
Acceptance of tasteless food
Unarmed police when actually they all need to be armed

Classic examples of how currently English culture means we are blind to things that are going to remove that very thing from us:

Driving standards going to pot, this is England not Pakistan or Turkey
Littering - getting worse every year, in line with immigration from 3rd world countries and general lack of moral standards
Capital of Culture - giving this to Bradford is an absolute joke

We can all work together to preserve the good parts

English is a 'melange' of languages from invaders.

These linguistic ingredients are called loanwords that have been borrowed and incorporated into English.

Loanwords make up 80% of English

What this means is that there is no such thing as pure English.

It is a melange. It's also the language we speak now and have spread to our great empire/commonwealth and the USA. Fair to say that the British empire actually has shaped our culture hugely. Also fair to say that England / the english culture has had some of the biggest influence on the rest of the world of any nation, through the empire and the language being spoken in the USA and the language of the internet.

Does your flag waving interfere with your world views?

Haha gotcha Tomww. Never had had a flag or done any flag waving. Of course, you would rather the UK be a Gazan haven than retain it's culture

Latin was the language of culture across Europe for centuries. French was the language of culture and politics in England for almost as long but during that period from the end of the Roman Empire to the beginning of the Tudor age, the English language underwent several changes in becoming the common tongue of the people; Chaucer did for English what Dante did for Italian, writing in the common tongue of the native people and giving them a sense of unity. A common bond that identified with a national unity. The Scots have a similar connection with Irish Gaelic and the Welsh have their Brettonic version; all nationally distinct and a fierce source of national pride that helped their culture endure.
We used a lot of German at the time of Chaucer, the nobility spoke French. The brummie accent is closest to how we spoke then
