What is Culture?

We used a lot of German at the time of Chaucer, the nobility spoke French. The brummie accent is closest to how we spoke then
Yes, Middle English was closer to German than the language we speak now but the folk who spoke it regarded themselves as English, distinct from the Norman (Plantagenet) rulers.

English culture is unique. It's shaped through centuries of being secure from invasion and through the language we speak. This contributes to the national character that most unconsciously have. It's fast being eroded by eastern influences which will continue to ruin this once great country.

Tea drinking
Self deprecating
Pothole avoiding
Saying sorry, please
Love of queuing
Cricket loving
Walking t'dog
Not complaining
Stiff upper lip
Dry wit and humour
Gardening crazy
Politeness
Seasonal traditions
Ability to buy fireworks year round
Acceptance of tasteless food
Unarmed police when actually they all need to be armed
That list seems to be more Yorkshire than England
Classic examples of how currently English culture means we are blind to things that are going to remove that very thing from us:

Driving standards going to pot, this is England not Pakistan or Turkey
Littering - getting worse every year, in line with immigration from 3rd world countries and general lack of moral standards
Capital of Culture - giving this to Bradford is an absolute joke

We can all work together to preserve the good parts
Is it all that bad. The erosion of culture if anything is from American influences.

Has any of this discussion so far helped you? I wasn't totally clear what you wanted to know.
Not really. Englishness appears to be devoid imho of any culture. Tea and scones apart, Englishness says lager lout and I’m failing to identify its value to me. Did I say my heritage is Welsh? Now that must get a few English heckles up.

Argh!!!!

Just kidding.

What makes a culture, though. When you look at other nationalities, what do you see, which makes you believe they have more culture.

A lot of Culture seems to be around variously dubious practices which make, or made, people feel comfortable.

An extreme example perhaps, but a close relative will be dying soon.. I expect there would be ONE other person at the funeral apart from my wife. What's the point?. If you say "show respect" then I say, "to whom, what for, why?". Nobody would even know. I'd rather not have any funeral for anyone unless it's a final family & friends meet-up where people actually want to see each other. A lot of that's about a ritual guilt for not wanting or bothering to see any of them for many years.

I'm sufficiently familiar with someother languages to know that related words like heritage, tradition, morality and whatnot have different boundaries. Most people don't even think about which is which.
German has a word "bIldung" which is a sort of mix. French has a word I can't even find, you see it in their museums but you can't directly translate it into English.

If you don't thnk Engllish has a culture, compare with some remote indigenous group. The Maasai, say, before the white man arrived.

Queuing.

Only an English person can make a proper queue. Woe betide anybody not following the unwritten rules of the Queue.

that’s chav culture, not everybody is like that. They are big minority but they seem to have the biggest voice.

There is plenty of culture that still exists

Oh, I don't know....we export our finest cultured leg tattooed 'ambassadors' to Benidorm regularly, along with their penchant for lager and dust.

Culture ?? The good old Dunkirk spirit

My mate had booked a holiday to Eygpt just before that Luxor terrorist attack he went not long after the attack

Plane was half empty apart from the Brits
All the Germans etc got squeaky b Ums and cancelled

He got interviewed by Eygptian TV at the air port  He made a rousing speech ( he had had a few in the plane ) we brits are made of sterner stuff not easily intimidated etc etc ( hic) with his knotted hanky on his head and Union Jack shorts:giggle:

As he staggered onto the coach to the hotel the coach was escorted to the hotel by military armoured cars mounted with machine guns :giggle:

Dunkirk spirit that and Marmite
