I was given a halogen light from my mum and am fitting it soon, I have just cleaned it up and the wiring is Black / White and Earth. Can anyone advise if black or white is Live as I have never seen this type of wiring before.

Thanks in advance

Paul

What voltage does the fitting require?

Black and white is not a standard colour system in this country.

Is is common in the USA, where many appliances use 110V.

It might even require a SELV supply.

My mum has taken it from the ceiling in the living room, on the sticker inside it says:-

240V 50Hz
It is from a company called ring lighting in Leeds.

It is a 3 hallogen spot light with 3 black wires (all joined together) and 3 white (also all joined) The light does not have a transformer and never has, it was wired direct

Thanks

Paul

I really don't think it matters which way round you wire it.

In the USA BLACK is Live and WHITE is Neutral.

Some "for sale in all countries" equipment is coming to the UK with this cabling.

There are two concerns when the white is connected to Live.

[1] Any switches in the equipment will be switching the Neutral wire leaving both sides of the lamp live when switched off.

[2] Sockets for screw in bulbs will have their threaded area connected to live even if the switch on the lamp is OFF. A serious hazard when changing a bulb.

Many thanks, will go for live black and check when switched off that it is no longer live.

Thanks again

Paul
