The Wave is unique because it can directly control the boiler modulation, no third party non-EMS bus controls can do this.

So a Hive (and these have not turned out to be a paragon of reliability) or Nest etc etc cannot possibly achieve the same energy savings.

Opentherm was designed many years ago to allow third party controls to intelligently drive other modulating boilers, but the reality is that only the boiler manufacturers lacking the r&d budgets to afford their own bespoke controls embraced it.

Wave is a UK centric device and unlike most other WC controls is simple to use and extremely well supported by the manufacturer. They are open till 8pm most days and answer the phone almost immediately.

Not much not to like, really.

If you have the budget, EVOHOME is the pinnacle but that is a zoning product.

With the worcester wave in weather compensation mode there is a way to stop the pump running 24/7 within the app,
Set up timings for your normal heating times but use wake then sleep, then home then sleep, and more if need be but always switch off the heating with the sleep option, click on settings within the app, click on weather compensation, then click on perameters at the bottom of the screen, at the bottom of the following screen you have an option nightly shut down type, choose CH OFF,
Now this will probably totally mess up the full heat curve, but I find it a more comfortable heat with the boiler heat setting at approx 50/ 55c, plus I get a better nights sleep.

I’m having a bit of trouble with my Worcester Greenstar 29CDI weather compensation mode at the minute.

It seems to have enabled itself and I can’t turn it off! The Wave app shows it is not activated but the pump runs all day.

If I turn the temp down on the wave to say 2 deg below room temp it does stop the pump and the water is allowed to preheat again.

Could someone shed some light on how to stop it. Our sytem has been running fine for 3 years with no problems.

How have you been using the wave? Just as a thermostat? Has it been in weather compensation mode? Are you using the timer or is your heating constantly on using the wave as an thermostat?

I use the wave in home presence detection with a away temp set at 19deg and a night temp of 17.5deg.

Home presence night mode comes in effect from 21:00 till 6:50 every day.

Weather compensation is not switched on.

There is no extra hardware. Just the Combi and the wave.

We have had the pump replaced and the logic board but the issue is still there. A 3rd visit by the engineer has been booked.

    Tricky one,
We get power outs and surges that has wrecked many PCB,I must have had 4 replaced in the last five years, the last PCB Worcester replaced had a power surge protector built in and the main wiring loom had to be replaced because of the modification, not saying that’s your problem, but does sounds like a problem with the feed wiring to the pump,

I'm also having trouble with my Worcester boiler pump and Wave thermostat. Very recently the pump started to continuously run during the day (I work from home, office in the same room as boiler). A Worcester engineer visited and assumed it to be the weather compensation feature on the app, but I've never used it, or any other special app settings. Not sure what it might be, he spoke to various knowledgable colleagues on the phone, but to avail. As a last resort, he decided to install a new wave thermostat, which worked... for a week, but today the pump is continually running again. The only way to stop the pump running is to manually lower the thermostat temperature 1ºc less than the desired temperature. If anyone has any solutions, I'd very much like to hear, otherwise it'll be another engineer visit.

Brett, I have suffered the exact same issue as you and have had the following work carried out to try to eliminate the problem...

Checked wave to make sure WC is off
    Pump changed
    PCB changed
    Wiring harness changed
    Diverter changed
NOT FIXED IT AFTER THESE CHANGES

And today (4thWB visit) the wave controller has been changed and the issue has gone. I was happy with the result but we seem to have lost the water preheat now

We have a 5 visit from WB planned for this Friday. I will update you if anything changes.

Thanks MrAbattoir! I had a new pump last year as part of the service. It might be the PCB, but as it's guaranteed, may as well book in another engineer visit. Just noticed the Wave is struggling to get up to the set temperature today, same issue?! Look forward to hearing any WB updates and if the new Wave lasts longer than my new one. I will of course reciprocate if/when fixed.

I had a problem with the wave not getting up to temperature, ran a digital battery powered thermostat along side it, the wave was out of calibration by +0.8 of a degree so I set back the calibration by -0.8, much better now

Hey guys, so glad I found this... and I think by the number of people having a similar problem in a short space of time there is a wave issue at play.

Last week or so my boiler pump would stay on, even when up to temp, or over! I have no special features turned on at all.

Had an engineer out today who was amazing, and reset something on the boiler but it doesn’t seem to have done the trick. Tonight it took 90 minutes for the wave to go up a degree (18-19) even though the house was toasty.

Interestingly when I phoned to book, the guy on the phone said I was the third person to phone with the problem, and one user had tracked it to a software problem with the wave. I think it’s at 2.19.01 and when this was rolled back the issue was fixed. No idea if this is the case or if there will be a fix, but for now it’s just little sleep and constant pump noise.

I was told that the pump will run until you are 0.5deg over the desired temp... but with the wave numbers seeming off, that would take an hour with the heating on, and the bloody thing all but goes off as it approaches the desired temp.

Hopefully they will acknowledge an issue, if there is one... and if not for some reason my boiler and wave have gone a bit mental.

    Sigh...

I wonder if this ties to the software issue on the wave? The new unit possibly had older software, that then updated after a week and broke it again?! Mine is 2.19.01 and that is what the phone support mentioned may be the issue.

    FYI
My firmware is sitting at 02.18.02 and still running fine. I wonder if my old unit was on 02.19.01.

    Time will tell.

I will mention it to the engineer on his 5th visit on Thursday when he is checking up with us.

Ahhh, that makes sense. My pump is merrily running away just now, despite being up to temp and no strange features on. The engineer today had be turn off the hot water ‘follow programme’ but sadly hasn’t worked... I’m going to have to sleep in the car at this rate.

Please do let me know how you get on. I believe the updates are automatic to wave (ie, not like an iOS app update) so wonder why yours is sitting at a different version to mine.

    Cheers
    James

Just off the phone again. Have to say their customer service and engineers have been great so far.

Anyway. They have someone looking into the issue and were interested that I have found other people with the same issue. Apparently all waves ship with 2.18.2 but they may update over the coming days so that may be where one guy had it fixed for a week with a new wave then it broke again.

It is with someone at Worcester and I should get a call back today. Will keep you updated.
