Talking to a mate today who is not English, he was saying when he first learnt English he thought a book maker - made books (understandable really)

so what other words can you think of that do not do what you would think

car boot sale- they dont sell boots for cars

Boots - its a chemist, not (soley) a foot wear shop

'house!', means winning an exciting money game and not particularly where you live.

'flat' is where some people live and not a sad girls chest. :confused:

'going to the pictures' is not visiting a gallery.

i can see what he is saying. (my late father was a train driver)

They dont actually drive the train, since it is on rails. they do however control its speed, brakes, stop at signals stop the right end on a platform etc, but my dad di get the hump if you said he did not drive the train
 
And it's not often you see them in their cabs, one dispute after another ;)
