Young Driver's First Car

I have just renewed on my van. I asked why a saintly driver such as myself, whose earnings have not increased since last year, should pay MORE than I did last year. It was to pay for bogus claims and the whole young male driver thing.
I hope you changed provider. Insurance always goes up, shop around for new customer quotes. I do it on every insurance.. all a silly game really.

Hence the more reckless attitude to driving? (Sense of invulnerability?)

Depends on whether the kid is wealthy enough to not care about the cost of their insurance, or not.

If someone is willing to rag around at silly speeds, with half a dozen other kids in the back, will points really deter them?

You're implying all young drivers/people are all the same kind of moron, which just isn't true.

Bikers already account for the greatest amount of fatalities on UK roads; putting the most inexperienced road users at the greatest amount of risk because it's cheaper (the other reasons you gave apply just as well to people in cars) is silly.

I'm far too lazy. I remember one instance taking 40 min's of going through the whole declaration bolax with a new company. When I totted up the time lost (did it at work) for myself and the lads waiting, I thought I'm not saving a bean.

Why can't details be shipped over?

Then do it in the evening, took me less than half hour. Renewal quote £900 (ish), finally insured for £250.(ish)

I'm not implying that at all.

Also, how many of the "biker" injuries and deaths were moped riders, compared to Valentino Rossi wannabees?

Why give someone who is statistically much more likely to crash, the tools to take a larger number of people with them?

Most of.

I can't imagine you'll pull off a good Rossi on something under 125cc, let alone the standard 50cc of a moped.

Then forgive me but it very much looks like you are.

1000 bikes in the UK to every 31,000 cars suggests that's impossible given the rate of fatalities amongst motorcyclists.

Most insurance you can get quotes online - enter your details once on something like Compare the Market' then take your pick of the quotes you get. Doesn't take long and besides, it's the principle of the matter - I'd rather that money was in my pocket than theirs. I regularly change providers of utilities and always things like AA/RAC. Can save hundreds.

We'll have to disagree on your "most of": 57%, Max. (and that's upto 125).

Have you ever ridden a modern 125? If you're fairly light, they're very fast.

And going back to your graph, doesn't that nicely prove the point (that the young are much more likely to crash)?

That's exactly what I've been saying and exactly why it's silly to put them on a vehicle that they're more likely to be in a KSI (killed/serious injury) when they're inexperienced.

I'm not sure why you would think 57% of 100% wouldnt constitute 'most of'.

You can argue with me all night. You can't argue with the numbers.

Young drivers (17-24 years old) are at a much higher risk of crashing than older drivers. Drivers aged 17-19 only make up 1.5% of UK licence holders [1], but are involved in 9% of fatal and serious crashes where they are the driver.
