young kids cycle to school alone..

my thruppence worth

it depends on the children it depends on the route

all schools have designated safe routes from the local area where kids do not have to cross a main road unless theres a recognised safe crossing point

i personaly think we wrap our kids up to tight there is no more danger now from evel people than years ago
in a lot off respects london is safer than other places more people about and slower average speed on the roads

in general let our kids be kids and stop being paranoid ;)

well the school in question has kicked off saying this is wrong... and they're outer london backstreet roads... and what i'm woried about... putting their route in a national paper is like a dinner menu to paedos...

when i read it i thought it was weird putting the route, it didnt help me make up my mind about this case but seemed like an invite/challenge (i have a sick feeling thinking about what i'm typing) but that aside i think an 8yr old should not be in charge of a 5 yr old, wee one simply falls off bike is howling with skint knee, what does the big one do, leave him to chap a door to get help, cycle home/school in a panic, nah not a good plan at all

kinda sums up my argument in one!

what is the problem with marking out the route!!
do we assume that any one with evil intent will not have the skills to know where the safe walking routes are
i think personaly the several dozen "kids" using the same route every day will be a great clue
i realy realy think we are over reacting and depriving our kids off years off freedom just in case

like with many species, the unassuming survive.. the ones that stand in the limelight can fight.... we're talk an 8yr old girl and a 5 yr old boy..... why make it any easier for the scum of this planet?

and you talk of 'several dozen kids that use this route'? how do you know?

because it will be a designated safe route
hanving said that i no more know how many use the route than you do but thats irrelivent realy
the instance off children being in danger will happen regardless of what we do
does any one actualy know how many poor children are abducted against the millions off hours that children are deprived from being children in there growing up years !!

big all with respect... we're not talking sexual abduction really... i think we've agreed that risk has never changed... we're saying roads used to be playgrounds, whereas, these days, they're potential death traps...

again with respect, do you have contact with an 8 yr old? and if so.. would they know what to do with a 5 yr old who's in danger...? that's my problem !

fair enough i appologise for not fully understanding your point

my son is now 18 but i went through the shall i let hin walk alone to school
indeed i used to walk behind him whist trying to evaluate his skills to let him walk alone
as he walked with his freinds and as a 10 year old it would often freighten me at there[him and his freind equall lack off attention to traffic at road juctions ]but thats what kids do
thats why we rely on motorist to watch when kids cross at juctions
any way when i was eventualy happy i would curtail my walk progressivly one junction sooner till eventualy he was was happy to go alone with his freinds

then the school was alerted to a possible problem with a man following kids to school so my son didnt want to walk to school so i again shaddowed him to school and guess what the the man was following the kids again the police where rightly informed
its just a shame that people dont ask questions from whom they see as a threat because what can seem as dangerouse behavior can be very innocent
when the police stopped me i explained and they even lauged at the misunderstanding
thats why i think paranoia is ruening lives

You all read the Daily Mail too closely. There are no more or no less 'peados' than has even been, but media hype says there is. If you are so far removed from reality, then for one stop posting here, I've seen it, and 2, you are overweight, middleclass idiots, that can't make your child walk the 1-2 mile walk to school, because you have an expensive 4x4, that you prefer, get a grip. You love a car over your kids, make the obese kids walk it. I travelled over 5 miles to get to school, on two busses, and often biked it. Socialists with excuses. Get off your arses and send the kids to school.

Kids are far too molly coddled now a days.
As an 8 year old i took my 5 year old brother to school and back and heavens above i had to carry him on my back when he would not walk fast enough . Also went to school in short trousers even in the snow.
Amazed my parents where never put away for child neglect

And what about the schools back then they used to give cycling proficiency lessons which in reality where for the jessies as every kid knew how to ride a bike from about 3 years old.

On another note . Both my kids could swim freely from 18 months old because i took them 4 times a week . I could just see some do gooder saying i put there lives in danger by doing this   .

i'd agree with you Joe... on the paedo thing... but the roads are so much more busy these days...

The road i used to live on was about 150 yards long and we used to play on it without any cars on it at all.... these days, you struggle to park either side of the road..

so cycling on the pavement (which is probably illegal anyway) means exposed to so many huge vehicle thundering by.... and if the five year old loses control of their bike..... as they tend to do... can you rely on an 8yr old to react accordingly?
150 yards  our whole (council  ) estate had no more than a dozen cars
