A 5 year old's plaything and people are suggesting that it be mains powered!!!
IMO it would be much better to build something that runs off of a 9v battery.
I.E. this here as RF may be building.
It's not hard to take that board, replace the LED's with transistors that in turn, turn on/off relays (including back EMF diodes) if you want it to turn on/off higher power lamps. but IMO they should still be battery powered.

How do you figure? A single LED wont be all that bright, but you can easily create an array of them, as seen in some real traffic lights. The bonus is that it can easily be run from a small 12v battery, so it's pretty safe for kids to play with.

i was only suggesting mains becuse its what the new lights lamps are.
my origonal suggestion was usining mains to power a tramsformer that runs the timer and runs the lights. the fact that its meant for a child does not count becuse the child does not play with the actaul lights, but goes or stops when the lights say, and my idea as i just said runs on a transformer which could be out of the way anyway.
i only mentioned triacs becuse of the new set of mains lights offered.

and how do you control them?
They are plugged into the mains at the mo with a 3 gang switch and RCD protected.
Open to advice on powering it via battery though.

a simple 3 position switch l e ds 12v input top one set red other green mid both yellow[amber] bottom position reverse r/greens
dead simple no cross wiring/or relays child operates

my first idea will run on batteries since it is 12v
LEDS are TBH out of the question, because they are too dim, yes you can get superbright leds, but they will cost a small fortune when you add up the number needed.
only thing i would say is 20w halogen lamps, but then you are going to need a car battery
(mine was designed so the lights are not lit by sunshine, so can have small lamps)
