Insulate the shed to get demand down to 2A (400W heater).
Or spend £1k+.
Or spend less on a genny.
Or spend less on a shed closer to the house.

Another comment is...
- Do not run a genny in the shed (CO poisoning)
- Do not run a LPG heater in a shed if avoidable (vast amount of water produced)

I've got it!

Plan E is 8 x 50m extension leads. More length than you need, but the voltage drop will be approx 120v.

Yep, you guessed it, then you can just use 110v centre tapped tools and lights or american stuff.

With a 10 Amp B type MCB a minimum of 2.5mm will be required to be able to trip MCB on the magnet trip so I would agree with ban all sheds and generator best option but I would also add an earth rod as no good quoting what is wrong with supply from house and miss problems with supply from generator.
With a similar problem supplying a small village from a single point in the Falkland we transformed to 3.3Kv at generator shed and back down to 400 local to each set of huts but the safely implications were massive.

OK point taken on transformers it was of course a joke but I was surprised working on the last construction job how few earth rods were used and general lack of knowledge on how to install them.
I argued for about an hour with a guy who genuinely thought he could test the earth rod with an earth loop impedance meter!
And another would thought a 1.2 meter earth rod was OK with a 750KVA generator with no earth leakage.
Using a generator to power a single item is relativity safe in the same way as a single shaver plugged into a shaver outlet the problem arises when multi-items are used.
I have been dismayed during my time working with generators on how many are not to British standard on earthing giving 110v to earth instead of 55v on reduced low voltage and having a mid tap to earth on 230 volt setting giving 57.5-0-172.5 volt instead of 0 - 230 volt on duel voltage models and this was on a well known Japanese unit.
I would in the light of this experience not recommend duel voltage generators.

Wow some are of their own.I did receive many decent replies to a question that was only posted to this forum because I am not an electrician.Maybe those who dont know in your world should never ask.
You should try giving your fellow beings the benefit of the doubt,before judgement.

For temporary work, every (sensible) solution proposed so far involving a temporary supply from the grid would almost certainly work out significantly more expensive than a cheap generator and fuel. 200 yards of relatively large CSA copper cable isn't cheap.

Thks Matthew for your advice.I have thought of a 2kva honda petrol gen set I seen on the net.{I do know about carbon monoxide poisoning,said before big brother bites}I also need to place a well ventilated shelter.
Would you be able to tell me the running cost for this set using an adjustable temp 1kw to 2kw infrared heater{this heater according to supplier heats a 12m2 area at full power which suites my needs}plus low demand lighting and small power tools.thks
