do we need a new runway

What i can't understand is that when the government are keen on us all reducing our 'carbon footprint' how can an extra runway at the country's busiest airport help that? If the airport can't cope with the number of flights it currently handles then it will have to reduce the number of flights, increasing demand, and therefore prices, and so less people will be able to fly - reducing carbon footprints left right and centre.

At busy times aircraft are wasting fuel queueing on the ground for their slot to take off and worse still, others are queueing in the air for their slot to land. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7196158.stm

So force them to limit the number of aircraft taking off and landing.

Congestion charging for aircraft - now there's an idea!

They will not stay on the ground.......... ...............
Quite right trazor. I gave a comprehensive answer to this in Softus' most recent post on the subject. It is a simple matter of Tim baiting the hook and then reeling em in!
Oh how can you say that when all the scientific evidence proves otherwise of course they wouldnt take off, would they?

I have to admit, that is such a juicy worm but fortunately I've just eaten. :D

they say it will bring jobs , but for who, will they have to recruit from abroad as the place is full of illegals according to press reports last year :?

there is one going up every 60 secs at peak times they really do need it

and as for taking the train to heathrow get the price down and you might be in with a chance

Too right.
The other thing is there is way too many 'local' flights available. Flying from Gatwick to Newcastle for example, stop being a lazy c**t and get on a train

Absolutely agree with the sentiment, however the price of train travel is ridiculous if not booked in advance. Not so long ago, I booked a flight from Heathrow to Shanghai then tried to get a train ticket from Gloucestershire to Heathrow. The train ticket was more expensive than the air fare! A taxi was about half the cost of the train.

I've never understood that anyway - by the time you've got to the airport, checked in and sorted any baggage, boarded, waited for take off and then the opposite at the other end surely it would be easier and quicker using another form of transport?

My other half did this trip recently.

Heathrow to Teeside, time in the air 35 mins, check in 45 mins, 20 mins drive to the airport, only hand baggage so no waiting for cases. 15 mins to end destination. Add another 20 mins for messing about here and there.
about 2.5 hours in total.

She would usually drive but it worked out cheaper to fly as the fuel prices were at their peak then. The train took longer and was slightly dearer.
