Why stop at illegal immigrants? Why not have an amnesty for ALL outstanding law breakers? Would free up the courts for a while, and we can all avoid having to pay those speeding/parking fines. What a jolly good idea. 
I think that every illegal caught should be made to do a year in the armed services abroad..
at least then they've done something to earn a place here...
oh wait... they don't let the ghurkas live here do they...?
line em up and shoot them at the ports.. that'll be a deterent to them..
we already have a border patrol in the foreign ports and catch many a day trying to get on the boats..
they have to hand them over to the french police who march them out of the port and set them free..... lunacy...
at least then they've done something to earn a place here...

Heard a rumour (probably a joke, but it wouldn't surprise me if it turned out to be true) - remember the fire in the channel tunnel? An illegal immigrant hiding on the fight train allegedly try to sue for damages
If they are legally allowed to stay here, they would be entitled to all the benefits etc,,, a can of worms really. Then once this lot have got away with it, say in 5 or 10 years time, we'll have another amnesty for double the number who will be drawn here like a magnet, to soft touch UK. Stupid daft idea. Someone said on the radio today that the country would benefit from the tax generated with these people legally working here, but the income they would earn would be so low, that many would probably require credits to top up their wage, costing the taxpayer more money. If they are here illegally, and caught, deport them,,, pronto.

An amnesty for illegal immigrants sounds attractive at first, with all the benefits of a clean slate, people paying their taxes properly, and so on, until you consider the inevitable consequence.
Lots more people decide to come to the country in the hope of another amnesty; then you have to declare one. Then you have to declare another one, and another one ...

The whole concept of the amnesty is presumably based on "we can't cope with the backlog, so let's call it quits" mentality. Maybe we could get some of the newly unemployed (and it seems there will be quite a few of them) to process the deportation process. At least it will feel like a worthwhile activity!
I believe that anyone caught employing illegal immigrants, should receive a massive fine.
Illegal immigrants should be given a set time, to declare their selves, then in so doing they should receive help to repatriate to their country of origin, after having supplied finger prints, and DNA samples.
If any illegal immigrants are discovered after set date then, they should be deported straight away, after fingerprint and DNA samples have been taken, no questions asked.

I don't know what you call massive, but atm I believe it's £10k per illegal immigrant..
And employed knowingly it's an unlimited fine and/or jail..
As to whether of course the penalties are actually used to the full is another matter.....
They reckon there is about 750,000 of them and the suggestion is that the 450,000 that have been here more than five years will be allowed to stay.
If they have counted 450,000 why didn't they keep hold of the baskets, when they were counting them, and put 'em on boats back to where they came from.

The reason it's a stupid idea is that employers employ illegals because they are cheap. As soon as you give them an amnesty they will get minimum wage. Therefore the unscrupulous employers will get rid of them quick-smart - and invite a new wave of illegals into the country to work for a pittance. Those given amnesty will have no job and will go straight onto benefits.
The fact that that berk Boris is talking about amnesty made headline news in Bangladesh. Guess a few more are already on their way eh? The guys a fool.
