I seemed to have developed a problem that has me stumbed, i hope some one can point me in the right direction !!

My living room light has recently gone, i believe due to my wife putting 60W bulbs into a "40w maximum" light fitting. one night the fitting went ping and the light went out.

Thinking it was the light fitting i went out and bought a new light fitting, fitted it but still nothing !

I have then changed the dimmer thinking it was that but still nothing.

All my other lights in the house are working, and i don't seem to have any tripped switches on my consumer unit. There is also no burnt wires at either end of the circuit!?

Can anyone help !! Got friends staying next weekend and we need light !!

Regards,

Dan

Have you tested for voltage at the light?
What configuration of wires are there coming from the ceiling?
How did you terminate the dimmer switch?
Is this light part of the circuit that supplies the other lights in the house or is it part of a separate circuit?
If a separate circuit have you checked at the fuse, has this broke?
First we need to know if there is a voltage at the light and/or at the switch.
If the colour cores are red or brown one of them should be your live feed.
Any pictures/diagrams or/and a description of what cables and core colours you have at both ceiling and switch will help.
Safely isolate the the system before you remove any covers.

hi wdta
i don't know, however, the wiring in the light switch matches the ceiling wiring, so doesn't look like it!?

As Prentice Boy says, you need to do some testing. Just because the colours are the same at each end does not mean that there could be a rat's nest of joints under the floor boards.

Do you have a multi-meter or access to one and are you confident enougth to use it on a live circuit????

ok i managed to get hold of a voltage tester, and i have power at the socket but not at the ceiling.

looking at the diagrams am i right in saying their will be a fuse pushed inside my ceiling?

cheers

Have you got power at the dimmer switch?
Could be a standing fault causing the dimmer switch to blow, quite probably the insulation on the wires in the fitting has gone crispy.

Fuse on the diagrams are there to indicate the fuse is in the live conductor, this will be the fuse/breaker at your consumer unit, not in the ceiling.
Have you terminated the dimmer correctly?
Try the light using a standard switch instead of the dimmer, see what happens?

yes i've got power at the switch but no power at the ceiling connection...will there be a fuse in the wiring!?

Sorry posted before i saw your reply fella. Sorry i'm looking at the Schematic diagram thinking that 5amp thing is a fuse.

so it's probably the switch?!
